About Ma Johnson’s Historic Hotel
Ma Johnson’s Historic Hotel – a living museum. Pete and Ma Johnson were real characters who had McCarthy’s first hotel. It burnt to the ground in 1921. They worked and rebuilt it and in August 1923 it reopened. The thriving community needed a boarding house more than a hotel. After the copper mines closed the venerable, old hotel sat dormant for most of the next 25 years. Today, guests enjoy an authentic throwback to pioneer days.
As a wonderfully restored living museum, everything that looks 100 years old is from the heyday of McCarthy. Today’s biggest travel trend is searching and satisfying the need for an authentic experience. Our guests find what they are searching for: an authentic Alaska bush community experience.
